Senior Moments

Senior Moments
I'll admit I have them too.....

It's really too bad life can't be more like this.  But sadly, no.  About 2 weeks ago an 11 month old was killed in a church parking lot in the Kansas City area by an elderly person.  The natural thought for me is "how old is too old?"  89 does seem old to most of us that are a far cry from this age.  Driving down the road I have often had to practically slam on my brakes as I have come upon an older driver.

Most drivers understand that when you drive so much slower than the norm you should move to the farthest right lane.  However, I have seen for seniors this is not always the case.  They really seem to be in their own world.

When this story was talked about on the local radio I heard a state trooper come to the seniors driving defense.  "I have seen just as many young and middle age drivers also doing dangerous things."  While this might be true, I still haven't heard of younger drivers backing into people or driving over them with their car, unless they were intoxicated of course!

Why this sort of incident does not seem to happen real often, there never seems to be anything done about it.  There are hardly any laws on the books that address seniors and driving.  Which I think is a shame.  My thought on this is that there are some very powerful groups "protecting" senior rights like AARP.

I know what you are thinking; if I was this age I would want all of my driving privileges.  I will honestly say, I don't really like to drive now.  I'm sure I will not want to be driving as I turn 89!

Any thoughts???????

Wacky Wednesday

My husband took a picture of this bird's nest earlier this spring at his car lot.  What an odd spot for a bird to nest.  No worries no birdies were hurt!

What about you, ever find a bird's nest somewhere other than a tree?

This is some scary !@#$% (bleep) !!!

Runaway Kia in Missouri

My husband had told me there are foreign cars that have done this in the past.  For me, this is just another reason not to like Kia's.  And yes, all the more reason to insist that all foreign cars are not created equal.

The story was first reported by ABC News a couple of weeks ago.  A woman from Iowa was driving down I-35 when her accelerator got stuck.  She drove for 59 miles as her 2011 Kia Sorento sped to 115 miles per hour.

Of  course she had a police escort and was on the phone with 911 this entire time.  They gave her the advice to lift up on the stuck accelerator and push down on the brake.  And that did work.  I bet you never saw anyone so excited to see a state trooper.

Kia Motors says they are unable to to duplicate this problem.  My thought on that is even if you could duplicate this problem I'm not sure I would share that with the public.  I might keep that on the down low! As for Ms. Ulvestad, I am glad she is okay.  If I was her I would be spending a lot of time with an attorney!

 Thoughts?.........

Okay so where have I been anyway?  Well life happens, as everyone knows.  I actually started a new job, and then there was the summer with kiddos,a grandfather had a long stay in the hospital, and well perhaps a little malaise.  But I have returned and hopefully as good as ever and maybe better.

Is Your Oil Change Routine Of The Past??????

I remember when I was a kid my dad beating it into my head that you always change your car oil at 3,000 miles.  It was just one of those things in life like brushing your teeth.  Your teeth might fall out if you don't brush them and your car.....well...what does happen if you don't change your oil at 3,000?

3,000 was the guideline used by most car manufacturers, but this is simply not true for cars purchased within the last 7 to 9 years.  What has changed?  Oil chemistry and engine technology have improved to the point that vehicles can go up to 7,500 between oil changes.  It seems with the push of everyone being greener wasteless oil changes have come into question.

There are is the question of what kind of driving do you tend to do?  If you spend most of your time on the freeway it should be closer to 7,500 miles.  In town driving would lend to an earlier oil change.

Of course how does this fair for oil change places like Jiffy Lube?  Well they will still get consumers needing oil changes, but not as often.  Most of these places are now leaving the oil change time standard up to the consumer and telling them to check their owners manual for an accurate guide.

There will always be those of us who just like the oil changed at 3,000 miles.  It just feels right.  And what wrong with that?

Is It Time For A Filter?

Basic car maintenance can really enhance the performance of your vehicle.  The air filter is one of those items that people take for granted.  I think most see this as an item they can do without if they have to like windshield wiper fluid.  What does it really do for the car anyway?

An an filter does just what is sounds like.  It filters out the bad air trying to circulate through the car.  Not replacing it when necessary can lead to problems such as poor performance, bad mileage and maybe even engine problems.  In my car the air conditioner stopped working correctly when the air filter needed to be changed.

The air filter is really something that should be changed every year.  Please check your owner's manual for the specifics.  This is truly something you can change yourself and not complicated whatsoever.  There are some great websites that will give you a tutorial.  One of my favorites is Edmonds.com .

I would suggest doing this yourself as this can save you significantly.  A lot of times when you get your oil changed they will try and hit you up for this air filter as well.  I have seen them charge exorbitant amounts to do this.
